Crime Prevention Safety Tips
Back-to-School Safety Tips
While gearing up for the next school year, you will want to keep a few things in
mind.
• First, remind your children about the dangers of talking to, or taking rides
from, strangers. For those children who walk to and from school, develop a
preplanned route you both know ahead of time. Once you have an
established route, develop a plan B to be used only in cases of construction
or other circumstances where their normal route is interrupted.
• Second, avoid labeling your child’s name in large print on the outside of
backpacks and other garments. Doing so will only inform a stranger of your
child’s name and could confuse your child into thinking they might know the
stranger if they were called by name. Instead, try using only initials to mark
garments and bags if they must be labeled on the outside. If you must label
their name, try writing it on the inside of the item in areas not normally seen
by the public.
• Also if you child carries a cell phone under the CONTACTS listing type the
word,”ICE.” ICE stands for In Case of Emergency. Under the label ICE add a
contact in the event police, fire, or ambulance needs to contact some one on
your child’s behalf. In some cases it might be a good idea to have several ICE
listings.
• Finally, remind your children of the dangers of answering the door to
uninvited guests. Have a great school year!
